Overview
Helpy is a mobile digital assessment platform built from scratch for addiction treatment centers. The product helps patients complete structured assessments throughout their recovery journey, while giving healthcare professionals a centralized view of patient responses and progress over time.
I worked on the product from the ground up, defining the UX architecture, designing patient and clinician workflows, and translating complex and sensitive medical assessments into a clear, low-stress mobile experience.
The Challenge
Addiction recovery requires regular assessments of a patient's physical and psychological state. These can include highly sensitive topics such as emotional wellbeing, aggression, behavior, and other aspects of a patient's condition.
The product needed to work for two very different audiences.
For patients:
- Complete sensitive assessments in a private and comfortable environment
- Understand complex questions without additional explanation
- Navigate longer questionnaires without feeling overwhelmed
- Feel confident that their personal information is protected
For healthcare professionals:
- Review patient responses efficiently
- Understand changes over time
- Identify patterns across multiple assessments
- Use structured information to support treatment decisions
There was no existing product or established UX architecture to build upon, so the experience had to be designed from scratch.

Privacy & Data Security
Because the platform deals with highly sensitive medical and behavioral information, privacy was a core product requirement rather than an afterthought.
Patient data was encrypted and securely handled throughout the product experience. The interface was designed to minimize unnecessary exposure of sensitive information and clearly separate patient and clinician experiences.
This also influenced how we approached research and usability testing.
Approach & Decisions
The platform was designed from scratch in close collaboration with healthcare professionals. We focused on creating separate experiences for patients and doctors, reducing complexity for patients while providing clinicians with meaningful insights into recovery progress.
Key design decisions:
- Role-based workflows: Created dedicated patient and doctor flows instead of a single interface to match their different goals and needs.
- Structured assessments: Divided complex questionnaires into smaller, step-by-step sections with clear progress tracking to reduce cognitive load.
- Clinician-informed UX: Iterated on prototypes with medical experts to refine assessment structure, terminology, and data presentation.
- Accessible healthcare UI: Designed a calm and readable interface with clear hierarchy, reusable components, and patterns that minimized user stress.
Solution
We created a digital assessment platform that helps healthcare professionals monitor addiction recovery through structured surveys and tests.
The application allows patients to:
- Complete regular assessments about their physical and psychological state
- Track their progress during treatment
- Provide consistent feedback throughout the recovery process
Doctors can:
- Review patient responses
- Analyze changes over time
- Better understand treatment effectiveness
- Make more personalized care decisions
Result
The final product transformed fragmented addiction assessment processes into a centralized digital platform for patients and healthcare professionals.
Through testing with real patients and continuous iteration, we refined the experience to better address their needs and reduce complexity during assessments.
The solution helped:
- Standardize patient evaluations
- Improve visibility into recovery progress
- Support data-informed treatment decisions
- Streamline workflows for healthcare professionals
